I look at this as a challenge. All the time I am trying to get more bang for my buck when it comes to fitting as many standards into a lesson as possible. There are many teachable moments that cannot be wasted. As I have heard from other teachers who are trying out a new form of technology in their classroom both student and teacher have to get their feet wet and come upon issues of digital literacy as they arise. Teachers sometimes are fearful of this because as a species teachers are kind of control freaks and like to see road block and avoid them, but I think it is healthy to teach students important lessons about proper program usage by making mistakes as they go along but subsequently learning from those mistakes.
Regardless of how full our schedules are digital literacy is a topic that must not be overlooked. It is our responsibility as educators to teach children how to conduct themselves on the internet in a safe and respectful way. Common sense media has many great lessons that can be melded with other lessons. We also don't have to spend a large amount of time teaching these lessons. I think that short little tidbits of pertinent information can be shared with students so that they have opportunities to learn and apply new knowledge about digital citizenship in a seamless way.

Hi Caitlin! I like what you wrote about fitting in as many standards into an individual lesson as possible. I was thinking that one way to do this could be during our Second Step lessons that we teach. When we are teaching a lesson on respect, we can add in the digital component by discussing how to show respect on the computer, as well as in person. This would be a way to add in a conversation about digital literacy within a lesson we are already teaching in our classrooms.

Yes! Second Step is a good jumping off point for the respect and safety conversation. I think that having students write about a topic related to social literacy is a good way to kill two birds with one stone. Students need to be given opportunities to write about many different topics. I could give them a scenario of a students that faces a problem on the internet and have them write about what they should do. Also, students could write an opinion paragraph about a topic of importance related to digital literacy. Which aspect of internet safety is most important and why?

In terms of getting our feet wet with digital technology, I think that it’s important for students to see that we are continuous learners and there is no better way for them to see that on full display then when we are trying to demo a new tech tool for them. We are absolutely control freaks but inevitably something will go wrong. It is in those moments, when students see how we cope with the stress of building our own digital literacy that they learn some of the most valuable lessons.
